With the superb peaks of more than 250 three thousand metre mountains creating a spectacular backdrop, winter here is impressive and inspires the people who come here, Alpine skiers and après-ski bunnies, ice-skaters and cross-country skiers, snowboarders and snow-shoe hikers, hikers, waterfall climbers and of course families, with the champions of tomorrow.
Sölden resembles an opera house, its glacier arena and its two ski areas open up for the season in the first week of September.
Brilliant ski-opening events
Obergurgl-Hochgurgl, the second first-rate destination at 1930 metres altitude celebrates the arrival of winter from the middle of November. The third-largest ski area, Hochoetz at the entrance of the 67 kilometre Alpine valley, which has an altitude location between 700 and 2000 metres, opens its runs from mid December and is a specialist area for families.
Ötztal. Peaceful & idyllic.
Winter guests will find any amount of nice cosy corners and contemplative villages. In a picturesque location at the head of the valley is the little mountain village of Vent (1900 m).
Längenfeld is located in the centre of the valley and is ideal for cross-country skiers, with its panorama slopes up to 1200 metres, providing lots of lovely views. Tirol’s ‘Aqua Dome’ spa is a real crowd-puller, where even the most hardened piste enthusiasts come from all over the valley to relax. A panorama road runs to Gries, right into an oasis of tranquillity for families with children and for winter hikers.
12 km toboggan runs (4 km are illuminated, footpath and shuttle bus) and 39 km slopes fill winter holiday-makers with enthusiasm in Umhausen (1036 m), while in Niederthai, a mountain village at 1500 metres, ski tots get to try out their first turns in the snow on four kilometres of pistes.
The Tirol villages of Haiming-Ochsengarten, Sautens and Oetz at the start of the valley offer all guests in the ski region of Hochoetz family-friendly and cosy lodgings, child supervision, ski schools and also a relaxed winter feeling on horse-drawn carriage rides, while tobogganing or on snow-shoe hikes by torchlight.
